rose of risør

Rose of Risør brings together sailors, musicians, and lovers of small spaces. As of 2022, Rose is based in Finistère, France.

Rose of Risør entered our lives in 2019. Hugo, an experienced racing sailor, would like to one day sail Rose to North America via the north Atlantic. Katrin has very little sailing experience and with family scattered around the globe, is interested in sailing as a low-impact way to travel long distances.

Some background: Rose of Risør is a 12-meter wooden gaff-cutter sailing boat constructed in Risør, Norway in the 1930s. Her build is based on naval architect Colin Archer’s designs for pilot cutters and Norwegian rescue boats.

Rose underwent a renovation between 2020-2021. With the help of naval carpenters at the Gweek Classic Boatyard (UK) at the time, we glued her mast back together, deep-cleaned and re-painted the interior, replaced a rotten beam, revamped a couple shabby windows, and recaulked the deck.

We are forever thankful to our Gweek boatyard friends Isaac, Susie, Caitlin, Ben, and Josh for keeping us going with your silliness, live music, hot coffee and cold beers.
